The size of homes can be measured as the average number of rooms per person, according to Eurostat. In the EU, there was an average of 1.6 rooms per person in 2022.
Among the member states, the highest average number was recorded in Malta (2.3 rooms per person), followed by Luxembourg (2.2 rooms), Belgium, Ireland, and the Netherlands (all 2.1 rooms).
At the other end of the scale were Poland, Romania, and Slovakia (all 1.1 rooms), as well as Latvia (data from 2021) and Croatia (both with an average of 1.2 rooms per person).
A related indicator is the number of people per household. In the EU, there was an average of 2.3 people per household in 2022.
In the member states, this number ranged from 3.1 people in Slovakia, 2.9 in Poland, and 2.7 in Croatia to 2.0 people in Denmark, Germany, Lithuania, and Sweden, and 1.9 people in Finland.
