INS: Length of transport routes, at the end of 2023

According to the latest report issued by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), at the end of 2023, the length of highways increased by 48 km. As of December 31, 2023, the total length of public road network was 86,388 km, of which 17,677 km (20.4%) were national roads, 35,046 km (40.6%) were county roads, and 33,665 km (39.0%) were communal roads.

Regarding the type of pavement, the structure of the public road network recorded: 49.4% (42,692 km) upgraded roads (94.2% with heavy and medium asphaltic covering), 23.9% (20,671 km) roads with light road covering, and 26.7% (23,025 km) gravel and earth roads.

Regarding the technical condition of public roads, 27.5% of the length of upgraded roads and 39.4% of the length of roads with light road coverings had exceeded their service life.

Of the length of national roads, 6,189 km (35.0%) were international roads, 997 km (5.6%) were highways, and 70 km (0.4%) were expressways. In terms of the number of traffic lanes, 2,161 km (12.2%) were four-lane roads, 311 km (1.8%) were three-lane roads, and 37 km (0.2%) were six-lane roads.

The length of county roads included 51.5% upgraded roads, and 35.1% of communal roads were gravel roads.

As of December 31, 2023, the length of main railway lines in operation totaled 10,611 km, of which 10,515 km (99.1%) were standard gauge lines, 91 km (0.9%) were broad gauge lines, and 5 km were narrow gauge lines.

The density of lines per 1000 km2 of territory was 44.5‰. The highest densities were recorded in the Bucharest-Ilfov region (206.3‰), the West region (60.0‰), the Northwest region (47.8‰), and the South-Muntenia region (43.8‰).
