The construction industry is responsible for approximately 8% of global CO₂ emissions, mainly due to cement production. In this context, green concrete — produced with recycled aggregates, fly ash, or alternative binders — is emerging as a key solution for ecological transition.
According to the European Commission (2024), the use of low-emission concrete can reduce a building’s carbon footprint by up to 40%. In Romania, several companies have begun implementing such solutions, and the Romanian Concrete Producers Association reports that in 2024, 6% of all concrete sold was of the eco-friendly type.
The development of mixing technologies, optimization of logistics chains, and standardization of formulas are essential for scaling up production. In addition, public authorities can accelerate the adoption of green concrete through sustainable public procurement policies and by updating technical regulations.
For both public and private construction projects, choosing low-carbon concrete is no longer a marginal option but an indicator of compliance with the new European sustainability standards. In the long run, investing in green technologies will define the competitiveness of the entire construction sector.
