The concept of the green building is gaining increasing traction across Europe, driven by the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. According to the Green Building Council Europe (2024), more than 30% of new constructions in the EU already comply with energy efficiency and sustainability standards.
In Romania, interest in BREEAM, LEED, and EDGE certifications has grown significantly over the past five years, with more than 120 projects registered in 2023. These buildings stand out through low energy consumption, use of recyclable materials, smart resource management systems, and integration of green spaces. Although initial costs are higher, they are quickly offset by utility savings and easier access to green financing.
The Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Administration (MDRAP) are currently promoting pilot projects for green public buildings, supported through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and the Environmental Fund. Between 2024 and 2026, funding will cover schools, hospitals, and administrative buildings designed to meet superior energy efficiency standards.
