The reinforcement of old buildings is one of the strategic priorities for local administrations in Romania, especially in the context of seismic risk. According to the Ministry of Development, over 2,600 public and residential buildings require urgent structural interventions. Funding is available through the NRRP and the National Program for Public or Social Interest Construction (PNCIPS), and in 2024 consolidation works worth over 2.3 billion lei were approved.

Modern technologies allow interventions with reduced impact on the building’s functionality: epoxy resin injections, jacketing with composite materials, and the use of high-strength steel. These solutions are recommended for the consolidation of schools, hospitals, and heritage buildings. The National Institute for Earth Physics emphasizes that a coherent intervention plan can reduce the risk of collapse by up to 70% in the event of a major earthquake.

Collaboration between authorities, designers, and construction companies is essential to ensure compliance with technical standards in force and to guarantee long-term safety. Investments in consolidation can no longer be postponed, and the initial costs are outweighed by the benefits in security and durability.
