Minister of Development Welcomes Japanese Ambassador for Talks on Seismic Risk Reduction and Technical Collaboration

Today, Mr. Cseke Attila, Minister of Development, Public Works and Administration, welcomed H.E. Mr. Takashi Katae, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Romania, at the Ministry's headquarters.

The discussions focused primarily on identifying new opportunities for collaboration with Japanese authorities in the areas of seismic risk reduction, emergency prevention and management in the event of earthquakes, and the implementation of modern technical solutions in the design, construction, seismic strengthening, instrumentation, and monitoring of buildings.

“We are pleased to reconfirm the interest and availability of the Japanese authorities to engage in joint actions with the Romanian state,” said Minister Cseke. “Our aim is to share expertise and implement the most effective technical, economic, and legislative methods for the seismic protection of buildings.”

On March 7th, the two countries marked the second anniversary of the Romania–Japan Strategic Partnership, an initiative designed to strengthen bilateral cooperation, including in the field of disaster risk reduction.

The two officials also agreed to initiate an exchange of best practices in areas such as urban planning and construction regulations, post-disaster building damage assessment, post-earthquake safety inspections, and the development of intervention strategies. They also discussed the implementation of modern, minimally invasive consolidation solutions as part of a pilot project proposed by the Ministry of Development.

Romania and Japan are already successfully collaborating in the scientific and technological domain through the Extreme Light Infrastructure – Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP) project at Măgurele, financed by the Ministry of Development, Public Works and Administration via the National Investment Company.
