Why cheap projects end up being the most expensive

In construction, a low price is rarely a real advantage. More often, it is just the beginning of a series of hidden costs.

The first compromise appears in materials. Reducing initial costs leads to the use of inferior solutions, which later generate maintenance expenses, repairs, or even complete rework. Today’s savings become tomorrow’s losses.

The second critical point is execution. Poorly qualified teams or weak management lead to errors that are not immediately visible but emerge over time: leaks, cracks, and losses in energy efficiency. Correcting these issues is always more expensive than preventing them.

Delays add to the problem. “Cheap” projects are frequently underfunded, leading to blockages, extended deadlines, and additional indirect costs.

In reality, the cost of a construction project is not defined by the initial price, but by the total lifecycle cost. A well-executed project is more expensive upfront, but predictable and stable. A cheap project is unpredictable—and in construction, unpredictability is the most expensive factor of all.
