Public buildings in Romania are undergoing a large-scale modernization process, with the main goal of reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions. According to the Ministry of Development, between 2021 and 2024 more than 1,500 schools and hospitals were renovated for energy efficiency, with total investments of approximately €2 billion.
The results of these programs show an average reduction of 45% in thermal energy consumption and 25% in electricity consumption. In addition, many buildings were equipped with solar panels, heat pumps, and smart lighting systems, contributing to lower operational costs.
For the period 2025–2030, the national strategy provides for the renovation of another 4,000 public buildings, with estimated funding of over €5 billion from European funds and the national budget. These investments not only reduce public authorities’ expenses but also increase user comfort while strengthening the labor market by creating new jobs in construction and related services.
