Construction Production in December 2024: Monthly and Annual Comparisons

In December 2024, compared to November 2024, seasonally adjusted construction production remained stable in the euro area and increased by 0.4% in the EU, according to preliminary estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In November 2024, construction production increased by 0.6% in the euro area and by 0.8% in the EU.

In December 2024, compared to December 2023, construction production decreased by 0.1% in the euro area and by 0.8% in the EU.

The average annual construction production for 2024, compared to 2023, declined by 0.9% in the euro area and by 1.3% in the EU.

Monthly Comparison by Construction Sector and Member State

In the euro area, in December 2024, compared to November 2024, construction production:

  • Decreased by 0.1% for building construction,
  • Remained stable for civil engineering,
  • Decreased by 0.2% for specialized construction activities.

In the EU, construction production:

  • Increased by 0.6% for building construction,
  • Increased by 0.7% for civil engineering,
  • Decreased by 0.1% for specialized construction activities.

Among the member states for which data is available, the highest monthly increases in construction production were recorded in Poland (+5.7%), Czechia (+4.6%), and Portugal (+3.6%). The largest decreases were observed in Bulgaria (-3.4%), the Netherlands (-2.0%), and Italy (-1.7%).

Annual Comparison by Construction Sector and Member State

In the euro area, in December 2024, compared to December 2023, construction production:

  • Increased by 0.1% for building construction,
  • Increased by 2.0% for civil engineering,
  • Decreased by 1.4% for specialized construction activities.

In the EU, construction production:

  • Decreased by 1.3% for building construction,
  • Increased by 1.1% for civil engineering,
  • Decreased by 1.3% for specialized construction activities.

Among the member states for which data is available, the largest annual decreases in construction production were recorded in Romania (-12.9%), Poland (-9.9%), and Austria (-9.3%). The highest increases were observed in Spain (+11.2%), Czechia (+9.7%), and Slovakia (+5.8%).
