Reinforcing Steel and Hot-Rolled Steel: Key Materials in Romania’s Construction Sector

Reinforcing steel and hot-rolled steel are fundamental materials for Romania’s construction sector, widely used in structural frameworks, reinforcements, and infrastructure projects. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics, domestic steel production in 2024 reached approximately 2.1 million tons, of which 1.5 million tons were allocated to the construction industry.

Steel prices have experienced significant fluctuations, ranging between 2,800 and 3,200 RON/ton for reinforcing steel and between 3,100 and 3,600 RON/ton for hot-rolled steel, depending on thickness and quality. Rising energy and raw material costs have directly influenced the market, prompting construction companies to optimize procurement strategies through long-term contracts.

Current trends include the adoption of steel with a high recycled content, which can reduce the carbon footprint by up to 60%. In addition, an increasing number of infrastructure projects require the use of steel certified under European standard EN 10080, ensuring traceability and compliance with safety regulations.

In the medium term, experts estimate an increase in demand with the launch of new projects funded through road and rail infrastructure programs, which will help maintain relative market stability.
