The shortage of skilled labor remains one of the biggest challenges for Romania’s construction industry. According to data from the Ministry of Labor, the sector requires over 60,000 additional workers annually to cover ongoing projects.
In recent years, the deficit has been offset by bringing in workers from Asia, particularly from Vietnam, Nepal, and Bangladesh. However, this solution is not sustainable in the long term, as their integration requires training programs and adaptation to local standards.
Another important direction is the digitalization and automation of processes, through the use of construction robots, 3D concrete printers, and drones for monitoring. These technologies could reduce reliance on manual labor by up to 15% over the next 10 years.
In the long run, the solution lies in vocational training. Dual education programs, developed in partnership between the state and the private sector, can create a new generation of specialized tradespeople. In this way, Romania could mitigate one of the greatest vulnerabilities of its construction sector.
