INS: The number of building permits issued by the authorities

In March 2024, 3037 building permits were issued for residential buildings, an increase of 18.8% compared to February 2024 and a decrease of 9.2% compared to March 2023. In the first quarter of 2024, 7422 building permits were issued for residential buildings, a decrease of 7.2% compared to the first quarter of 2023.

March 2024 compared to February 2024

In March 2024, 3037 building permits were issued for residential buildings (+18.8% compared to February 2024), with a total useful area of 701,531 square meters (+10.4%). Of the total building permits for residential buildings, 70.9% are for rural areas.

March 2024 highlights an increase in the number of building permits issued for residential buildings compared to the previous month (+481 permits).

In terms of territorial distribution, this increase is reflected in all development regions: Northwest (+127 permits), South-Muntenia (+89), Southeast (+76), Center (+74), Northeast (+63), West (+21), Bucharest-Ilfov (+19), and Southwest Oltenia (+12).

In March 2024, 598 building permits were issued for non-residential buildings (+17.3% compared to February 2024), with a total useful area of 321,477 square meters (+44.3%).

Compared to the previous month, March 2024 recorded an increase in the useful area of building permits issued for non-residential buildings (+98,623 square meters). In terms of territorial distribution, this increase is reflected in the following development regions:

Center (+47,198 square meters), Northeast (+23,092), Bucharest-Ilfov (+17,706), Southwest Oltenia (+14,169), and Southeast (+10,568). Decreases were recorded in the following development regions: Northwest (-6781 square meters), West (-6166), and South-Muntenia (-1163).

March 2024 compared to March 2023

March 2024 highlights a decrease both in the number of building permits issued for residential buildings (-9.2%) and in the total useful area (-16.0%), compared to March 2023. In terms of territorial distribution, this decrease in the number of building permits issued for residential buildings (-309 permits) is reflected in all development regions:

Center (-121 permits), Bucharest-Ilfov (-52), Northeast (-39), Southeast (-35), South-Muntenia (-25), West (-24), Northwest (-11), and Southwest Oltenia (-2).

Compared to March 2023, March 2024 saw a decrease in the number of building permits issued for non-residential buildings (-10.2%) and an increase in the total useful area (+17.8%).

In terms of territorial distribution, this increase in the useful area of building permits issued for non-residential buildings (+48,495 square meters) is reflected in the following development regions:

Center (+33,374 square meters), Bucharest-Ilfov (+28,540), West (+27,603), Northwest (+11,912), and Northeast (+8513). Decreases were recorded in the following development regions: Southeast (-44,704 square meters), South-Muntenia (-11,791), and Southwest Oltenia (-4952).

First Quarter of 2024 compared to First Quarter of 2023

In the first quarter of 2024, 7422 building permits were issued for residential buildings, a decrease of 7.2% compared to the first quarter of 2023. Decreases were recorded in the following development regions:

Center (-331 permits), Northwest (-157), South-Muntenia (-75), Southeast (-35), Northeast (-16), and Bucharest-Ilfov (-2). Increases were recorded in the Southwest Oltenia (+26 permits) and West (+16) development regions.
