Hungary’s Largest Standalone Battery Energy Storage System Commissioned by MET Group
MET Group has officially inaugurated Hungary’s largest operational standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), located at the Dunamenti Power Plant in Százhalombatta. The facility boasts a nominal capacity of 40 MW and a storage capacity of 80 MWh, supporting a two-hour discharge cycle.
This project marks the latest milestone in a series of BESS investments made by MET across Europe, underlining the company’s long-term strategic commitment to energy transition and system flexibility.
Back in 2022, MET Group deployed a 4 MW / 8 MWh pilot BESS at the same Dunamenti site, using Tesla Megapack 2 technology.
With the new installation now operational, MET Group and Dunamenti Power Plant are strengthening their contribution to Hungary’s green energy transition. The current cumulative BESS capacity at the site would be sufficient to power Budapest’s entire public and decorative lighting network for four hours.
The equipment supplier for the project is Huawei Technologies, while the main contractor is Forest-Vill Ltd.
At the official inauguration ceremony, Péter Horváth, CEO of Dunamenti Power Plant, emphasized:
“Battery storage systems are a key component of the energy transition, as they enable a higher integration rate of renewable energy sources into the grid.”
Péter Kaderják, President of the Hungarian Battery Association, added:
“We must do everything possible to harness Hungary’s renewable energy resources using reliable and cost-effective technologies. This is why our association supports the national energy policy, which rightly prioritizes the green energy transition.”
With ongoing investments in BESS projects across Europe—including the 2024 acquisition of French energy storage operator and developer Comax—MET Group aims to meet the increasing demand for grid balancing through dedicated technologies that underpin the green transition.
