The “Anghel Saligny” National Investment Program – A Solution for Romania’s Basic Infrastructure Gaps
“In 2020, nearly 28% of the population did not have access to a basic public service: running drinking water. 44% of the population lived in households not connected to a sewage system, over 2,000 localities were not connected to the natural gas network, and more than two-thirds of county and communal roads were unmodernized,” stated Minister of Development, Cseke Attila.
The minister added that in 2021, the Government adopted the “Anghel Saligny” National Investment Program, a strategy designed to address the structural infrastructure shortcomings in local communities.
Results After Three Years of Implementation
Moreover, while only 4,000 kilometers of county and communal roads were modernized at the time of the 1989 Revolution, Romania now counts nearly 26,000 kilometers of modernized roads in these categories. Additionally, the number of localities connected to the gas network has doubled between 1990 and 2023.
