According to data provided by the Romanian Green Building Council (RoGBC), the market for eco-friendly construction materials in Romania recorded an annual growth of 9% between 2020 and 2024, and in 2025 it is estimated to reach the milestone of €1 billion in cumulative turnover.
Among the materials on the rise are FSC-certified wood, low-carbon concrete, hemp-based insulation, and recyclable products such as reused bricks. However, large-scale adoption is still limited by high prices (15–30% above the market average), the lack of standardization, and the absence of fiscal incentives.
In July 2025, the Ministry of Environment launched a call for projects dedicated to green public buildings, which will include mandatory sustainability criteria for the materials used. In addition, a methodology is being developed to evaluate the carbon footprint of construction products.
Industry experts are calling for legislative clarity, fiscal facilities, and support for local production of eco-friendly materials in order to advance the transition towards a sustainable and competitive construction sector at the European level.
