Smart bridges represent the future of infrastructure, combining advanced materials, IoT sensors, and artificial intelligence to ensure the safety and durability of constructions. These structures are equipped with real-time monitoring sensors that measure vibrations, stress, and temperature, providing essential data for predictive maintenance.
According to a report by the European Transport Safety Council, the use of intelligent monitoring technologies reduces the risk of major failures by 60% and maintenance costs by 30%. In Romania, the first pilot projects for smart bridges have been implemented in the Transylvania region and on highways currently under construction.
The materials used, including ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) and specially treated steel cables, extend the lifespan of structures to more than 100 years. The integration of AI systems enables early detection of structural issues, reducing the risk of major accidents.
In the long term, the adoption of these technologies will transform Romania into a regional hub of modern infrastructure, capable of meeting the demands of safe and efficient transport.
