Logistics and Traceability: Key Priorities in the Romanian Dairy Industry

Logistics and traceability have become central pillars of the dairy industry, in a European context where food safety and supply chain efficiency are strategic priorities. In Romania, over 1.1 million tonnes of milk are collected industrially each year, and their journey from farm to shelf must comply with strict quality and hygiene standards.

An efficient logistics system involves collecting milk under controlled temperature conditions (2–4 °C), transporting it in insulated tankers, and delivering it to processing units within a maximum of 24–36 hours. The implementation of intermediate regional collection points can reduce costs and optimize delivery routes.

Traceability, mandated by European regulations (e.g. Regulation (EC) No 178/2002), allows tracking of milk batches from the farm to the final product. Most major processors use ERP systems integrated with traceability modules, QR codes on packaging, and interconnected databases. These tools provide added assurance for consumers and are essential for export.

The costs of implementing such systems are offset by reduced losses, the prevention of costly product recalls, and the acquisition of certifications (IFS, BRC) that facilitate access to foreign markets. Moreover, Romanian consumers are beginning to value products that clearly indicate their origin and supply chain journey.

Investments in logistics infrastructure, the digitalization of traceability processes, and direct partnerships with dairy farms are strategic directions for Romanian processors aiming to remain competitive.
