VELUX Romania Study: Daily Stress from Home-Related Issues Can Be Reduced with Smart Solutions

VELUX Romania, one of the leading manufacturers of roof windows, has conducted a national study among homeowners to explore the main sources of daily stress and how smart home solutions can contribute to a more balanced lifestyle.

According to the survey, 1 in 3 respondents experience daily stress related to housing issues, especially individuals aged 45 to 54.

When compared to other sources of daily stress, home-related problems are just as significant as societal concerns (31%) or family relationships (31%), highlighting the substantial emotional impact of our living environment.

The study, based on a nationally representative sample of over 1,000 people, found that 45% of respondents experience housing-related stress several times a week, while 17% feel this stress every single day.

When it comes to support from partners or family members during stressful home situations, 42% of homeowners feel the help they receive is insufficient, and nearly 20% report receiving no support at all.

Top Sources of Housing-Related Stress

For 53% of respondents, the main source of housing stress is paying bills, with this issue being particularly pronounced among rural residents (59%) and those aged 45–54 (48%).

Other stress triggers include:

  • Leaving doors unlocked or lights on – about 25% of participants
  • Leaving windows open15%
  • Forgetting the iron on or worrying about pets21%
  • Oven left on19%
  • Dirty dishes and uncollected garbage14%

How People Cope with These Stressors

Nearly 50% of respondents try to solve the root cause of the problem directly, with this proactive approach being most common among individuals aged 55 to 60 (57%). However, 36% prefer to distract themselves, trying to take their mind off the issue, while 11% vent their stress on others, often leading to conflict.

Worries About Open Windows – A Common Stressor

Around 33% of respondents report weekly stress over forgetting windows open, especially:

  • Street-facing windows28%
  • Interior or courtyard-facing windows25%
  • Roof windows1 in 10 people

Of those who forget windows open:

  • 48% have experienced rain damage
  • 38% noticed a drop in indoor temperature
  • 34% dealt with insects or pests entering
  • 17% experienced break-ins or theft

Yet, nearly 60% of respondents do nothing when they realize a window is open. Only 26% go back home to close it, and 17% contact someone else to fix the issue.

Interestingly, 50% of respondents reported experiencing false alarms, thinking they had left a window open when it was actually closed.

Smart Electric Solutions from VELUX – A Practical Answer

To address these concerns, VELUX offers electric roof window solutions that can be controlled remotely and automatically close when they detect rain—a long-term, user-friendly fix for everyday stress.

However, 74% of respondents have never heard of such a solution, even though 46% would be willing to invest up to 1,000 lei in one.

In this context, VELUX aims to reduce Romanians’ daily stress by providing smart home solutions that enhance comfort, safety, and control. By investing in technologies that simplify daily life, VELUX not only improves the functionality of homes, but also contributes to a more relaxed and balanced living environment.
