Building Information Modeling (BIM) in Romania: From Pilot Projects to Mainstream Adoption

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is becoming increasingly used in Romania, offering a digital solution that integrates design, execution, and building management in a collaborative environment. According to a European Commission report, the use of BIM can reduce project costs by 15–20% and shorten execution times by up to 30%.

In Romania, BIM adoption is still in its early stages, but pilot projects already exist in road infrastructure and public building construction. The Ministry of Development has announced that by 2030, BIM will become mandatory for all publicly funded projects, aligning with European directives.

Key advantages include reducing design errors by detecting clashes before execution, optimizing material usage, and improving lifecycle management of buildings. In addition, BIM facilitates the integration of smart technologies, such as IoT sensors, for real-time monitoring of energy consumption.

Challenges remain in the shortage of certified specialists and the high initial investments required in software and training. Nevertheless, construction companies that adopt BIM early can gain a significant competitive advantage in the market.
