The European construction sector is undergoing a structural transformation driven by digitalization, sustainability requirements, and labor shortages. According to the European Construction Industry Federation (FIEC, 2024), the integration of digital technologies such as BIM (Building Information Modeling), augmented reality, and on-site logistics automation is increasing across all member states.
In Romania, the adoption of these technologies remains fragmented. Although the local market has begun implementing BIM solutions in public projects, especially in transport infrastructure, SMEs in the residential construction sector face difficulties in adapting. According to INS, only 6.3% of construction companies in Romania used advanced digital technologies in 2024.
This discrepancy affects internal competitiveness and the ability of Romanian firms to participate in European tenders. The lack of standardization and the initial implementation costs represent major barriers. Nevertheless, global trends are expected to accelerate adoption: by 2030, over 50% of projects in the EU will be fully digitalized, according to the European Commission.
To remain competitive, the Romanian industry requires public policies that support technology adoption, as well as collaboration between universities, companies, and local authorities. The modernization of the construction sector is not optional, but a prerequisite for integration into the European single market.
