🚧 Building Information Modeling (BIM) Becomes Standard in Romania’s Major Infrastructure Projects

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is rapidly becoming a standard technology in large-scale infrastructure projects, being increasingly adopted by contracting authorities and general contractors across Romania. Through BIM, all components of a project are digitally modeled, enabling an integrated visualization of structures, systems, and construction processes.

The benefits are numerous: reduced on-site errors, more accurate cost estimations, optimized timelines, and real-time collaboration among project teams. Construction companies that have implemented BIM report design time reductions of 20–30% and significant savings in unforeseen expenses.

Moreover, BIM is increasingly required in national and EU funding guides, particularly under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). In Romania, BIM implementation is accelerating in projects such as highways, water and sewage networks, educational infrastructure, and regional hospitals.

However, a shortage of specialists and the initial investments in software and training continue to pose major barriers.

The Ministry of Transport and CNAIR (National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration) have announced plans to make BIM a mandatory requirement in upcoming public tenders, which will push the entire construction industry to adapt quickly.

It is therefore recommended that construction firms begin their transition now, through internal training and partnerships with BIM experts.
