The European construction production has increased by 1.8%

Seasonally adjusted construction production increased by 1.8% both in the euro area and in the EU, according to the first estimates by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In January 2024, construction production increased by 0.2% in the euro area and decreased by 1.2% in the EU.

In February 2024, compared to February 2023, construction production decreased by 0.4% in the euro area and by 0.6% in the EU.

Monthly comparison by construction sector and by Member State

In the euro area, in February 2024 compared to January 2024, construction production

increased by 3.5% for building construction,

increased by 4.1% for civil engineering,

increased by 1.7% for specialized construction activities.

In the EU, construction production

increased by 3.4% for building construction,

increased by 3.6% for civil engineering,

increased by 1.3% for specialized construction activities.

Among the Member States for which data is available, the largest monthly increases in construction production were recorded in Austria (+9.3%), Germany (+7.9%), and Slovenia (+6.3%). The largest decreases were observed in Hungary (-8.5%), France (-2.1%), and Sweden (-0.9%).

Year-on-year comparison by construction sector and by Member State

In the euro area in February 2024, compared to February 2023, construction production:

decreased by 2.5% for building construction,

increased by 4.9% for civil engineering,

decreased by 0.1% for specialized construction activities.

In the EU, construction production

decreased by 2.8% for building construction,

increased by 4.2% for civil engineering,

decreased by 0.5% for specialized construction activities.

Among the Member States for which data is available, the largest annual decreases in construction production were recorded in the Netherlands (-12.9%), Finland (-6.9%), and Austria (-5.9%).
