The construction industry is increasingly aligning with sustainability goals, and eco-friendly materials are becoming a strategic choice for both builders and developers aiming for green certifications (e.g., BREEAM, LEED, nZEB). According to a report published by Eurostat, the use of recyclable and low-carbon footprint materials in the European Union has increased by 26% over the past five years. In Romania, this trend is beginning to take shape, especially in office and public building projects, where laminated wood, unfired brick, natural insulation (wool, hemp), and low-cement-content concrete are increasingly being used.

The advantages are numerous: enhanced energy efficiency, reduced waste, lower long-term costs, and access to dedicated funding. Moreover, investors who incorporate circular economy principles benefit from additional scoring in PNRR calls or public procurement processes.

However, large-scale adoption remains slow, hindered by the higher prices of green materials, the lack of clear standardization regulations, and the reluctance of stakeholders involved in the permitting process. Industry associations are calling for fiscal incentives and technical guidelines to accelerate the transition.

In the medium term, sustainable materials are expected to become the norm in major cities and publicly funded projects, gradually forcing the entire production and construction chain to adapt.
